After a brief battle with myeloma and kidney failure, Dolores La Liberte passed at home on February 2; she was 80 years old. Short-statured with strong intelligence, wit and spirit, Dolores earned the nickname “Attilla the Honey” while Division Comptroller, and it stuck. With high standards and adherence to rules and budgets, she set a high bar that people trusted. After joining the 49 Degrees North Ski Patrol near Chewelah, Washington in 1982, she quickly attained Senior Alpine and was elected Patrol Director; she was recognized with National Appointment Number 6998 in 1988. Region and Division roles soon followed, at times simultaneously. Dolores is acknowledged in the introduction of the first OEC Manual (following the WEC manual) as having contributed as the PNWD WEC Supervisor; she filled this role at least 3 years, from 1989-92. She was IER Region Director 4 years from 1993-97, IER Treasurer/Registrar 2 years from 1997-99, Division Controller 11 years from 1996-2007 and Division Director one term from 2007-2010. Dolores was awarded 2 Distinguished Service Awards; this is not supposed to happen, but she served for so long and well that the nominators had forgotten about the first one. True to her direct and honest character, the first thing she said on stage when called up at the Division Convention was “I already have one! I can’t get another. But thank you!.” Dolores was born in 1944 in Kalispell Montana. She grew up exploring the mountains and lakes of Western Montana. She loved everything outdoors—camping, ice skating, snowshoeing, to riding forest service roads on her motorcycle with the wind in her hair and one of her dogs riding on the tank. She was proud to say she learned to ski and race in high school at Big Mountain (now known as Whitefish Mountain). Dolores graduated from Flathead High School in 1962, later settling Spokane, WA where she met Terry La Liberte at community college, later marrying him in 1976. She received her BA in General Studies from Eastern Washington University in 1988. Dolores is survived by husband Terry La Liberte at the family home, daughters Debbie Lynch (Kevin Lynch) and Kimberly La Liberte, and grandsons Ray Molander and Hayden Porter. She was preceded in death by her daughter Yvonne Gies. Dolores loved animals, especially dogs.
