NSP Course # P054190011
This course is for all S&T Instructors, Evaluators and Mentors. This clinic is taught by a PSIA Level 3+ Instructors and will improve skiing evaluation skills of NSP Transportation Program instructors, providing NSP trainers a means to develop a photographic eye using observational cues to assist them in training toboggan operators. The course will also give the Instructors the tools to correct the techniques of the Alpine patrollers.

9:00am – 2:00pm - Above Palmer and Beyond – Tour & Training – Back Country Techniques (NORDIC)

This clinic will be conducted by S&T Instructors who are seasoned backcountry skiers/mountaineers that will lead a tour up to the Devil’s Kitchen/Hogsback area on Mt. Hood to explore out of bounds terrain above the Palmer lift. Route selection & assessment, tour hazard recognition & assessment, equipment selection & use, avalanche transceiver discussion/use, rescue options, and group dynamics/heuristics will be discussed. You will need to have your own transceiver, shovel, probe, skins and/or snowshoes to participate and be in reasonable physical shape. The group will be climbing approximately 1800’ vertical above the Palmer lift, so participants will need to bring enough food and water to sustain themselves for a “Multi-Hour Tour” 😎. The class will require skiing/boarding from out-of-bounds terrain back into the resort at the end of the class, therefore participants should be accomplished off-piste skiers/boarders. Actual location will be weather, terrain, and avalanche hazard dependent. You will need to fill out a wilderness permit (located in the day lodge) prior to the leaving the permitted ski area boundary.
